Due diligence checklist

Verify the carrier—including this one.

Due diligence is not disrespect. It is how shippers and owner-operators protect freight, safety records, equipment, income, and reputation. Start with official sources, then compare the paperwork to the sales conversation.

4 BROS guide

A practical verification sequence.

01

Search the authority

Use FMCSA systems to find the legal name, USDOT number, operating authority, address, and publicly available safety information.

02

Review the safety record

Understand the record you would operate under or trust with freight. Data has context, but it should never be ignored.

03

Request insurance evidence

Ask for current proof appropriate to your role. Confirm coverage dates and the legal entity shown.

04

Read the agreement

Compare compensation, deductions, insurance, equipment responsibilities, escrow, termination, and records access to applicable requirements.

05

Ask operational questions

Discuss dispatch, load acceptance, home time, communication, documents, claims, breakdowns, and settlement corrections.

4 BROS guide

Red flags that deserve a pause.

  • Pressure to sign before receiving the complete agreement
  • Compensation described differently by different people
  • Unnamed deductions or blank fee language
  • Requests to purchase, sell, or improperly transfer authority credentials
  • Insurance documents that do not match the legal entity
  • Unwillingness to provide a representative settlement format
  • Promises of guaranteed income without a written basis
  • Instructions to conceal information from regulators, insurers, brokers, or customers
